Democrats in the South are more conservative than Republicans in the Northeast.

Parties are just ways to form coalitions before the general election. Republicans are the coalition of the more "right-leaving" groups, while Democrats are the coalition of the more "left-leaning" groups. Don't expect to much from national coalitions.
