Here's the thing, no one lied. What happened was the loudest weirdest people put themselves in charge of organizing for what everyone mostly agreed with anyway. They played it straight and sane for awhile. When everyone else that could have kept it sane got what they wanted and left, they were left with the keys to the kingdom, all the money and organizational power, and no one to put a check on the crazy. Its the exact same thing that happened to the ACLU. The crazies got themselves into control by being loud and sounding sane, as soon as they had a chance they cut out the sane and go full REEEEEEEE
