A Florida native, Lagoa was the first Hispanic woman to serve on the Florida Supreme Court. "She has been the essence of what a judge should be,” DeSantis said when he nominated her.

Trump nominated Lagoa to serve on 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2019. She was confirmed by the Senate in a bipartisan vote, which could help ease her path to the court if she’s selected by the president again.

At 52, Lagoa would be the youngest justice on the Supreme Court, just a few months behind one of Trump’s other nominees, Neil Gorsuch. A lifetime appointment to the court would allow her to serve for decades to come.

Lagoa, 52, would bring lengthy judicial experience in state and federal courts as well as two potential political benefits: She is a Cuban American from a battleground state Trump desperately needs to win in November.

A graduate of Florida International University and Columbia University Law School, Lagoa was raised in Hialeah, Fla., the daughter of parents from Cuba.

“Justice Lagoa’s proven commitment to upholding the rule of law, unparalleled legal career and vast experience on the appellate bench distinguish her among the most qualified individuals to serve on our state’s highest court,” DeSantis said upon selecting her for the state Supreme Court.

Lagoa, is a member of the conservative Federalist Society, which stresses that judges should "say what the law is, not what it should be.”

Trump nominated her for the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last September, and she was confirmed by an unusually lopsided 80-15 Senate vote in November. Most of Trump's nominees win confirmation narrowly (Amy Coney Barrett only confirmed by a vote of 55-43).

Get it done Mitch, and quick. Hope she is announced tomorrow and confirmed in 2 weeks or less. Take this issue off the table quickly. Don't let it turn into another Kavanaugh.

No vote right now. We need to energize the base. Ramming through a nominee before the election will only motivate the radical left. She's a terrific candidate and would actually help Trump on the ballot.

If Trump loses, we can always get the SC vote in November/December.

Disagree. The left have broken records fundraising off this- the longer it drags on the more media brainwashing will occur. Average people will start to believe she's the worst person in the world. Saw it happen with Kavanaugh. Throw so much shit at him people think some of it has to be true. The demonization from the media will be 24/7.

Lagoa was confirmed by a 80-15 Senate vote in 2019. Let's hear those D Senators who voted for her last year now claim that she's a Nazi rapist. It will only further de-legitmize their party.

Besides, it doesn't matter if it "drags on." We have a Senate majority until January, regardless of what happens in November.

We want this to be a ballot issue. If the seat is filled, our base will be less likely to vote.

If Bidens wins, they are going to stack the Supreme Court, so stopping him is the most important.

Most Trump supporters are gonna vote no matter what. The scary thing is this will motivate Bidens low energy voters to actually get out and vote for him. They are gonna believe their life depends on stopping the Republicans- especially women. The longer this drags on the more fired up Dems will get. The brainwashing from the msm will be next level.

Independent/swing voters are a MUCH bigger block than Biden's core voters. His base, and their "energy," doesn't matter.

Trump needs to win over the suburban soccer moms. The MSM propaganda will be 10x worse if he rams through a nominee just before the election. "He's a dictator, blah, blah...."

John Paul Stevens took 19 from formal nomination to confirmation. I saw independents turn on Kavanaugh, thinking at least some of the allegations must be true, as there was so much negative media coverage on him. The same thing will happen to her as this drags on. I see no positives from letting this drag out. Dems will continue to break records fundraising off it. Get it done and take it off the table. Don't give the Dems and their media propagandists time to demonize this woman in the eyes of the public. Get it done in a couple weeks.

Thank you for this. I know Barrett has a lot of support here, but I think that lagoa is a better play here. He can nominate Barrett after Thomas retires next year when trump gets re-elected.

Yes, Barrett is only 48 years old. But she's too polarizing for this specific environment. We need to ease the minds of the suburban soccer moms.

Plus, Lagoa was confirmed by a 80-15 Senate vote in 2019. Most of Trump's nominees win confirmation narrowly (Amy Coney Barrett only confirmed by a vote of 55-43). Let's hear those D Senators who voted for her last year now claim that she's a Nazi rapist. It will only further de-legitmize their party.

I’m hoping it’s Lagoa now. She seems like a good choice.

UPDATE: We’re hearing good things from numerous sources about possible #SCOTUSnominee 11th Circuit Judge Barbara Lagoa. Lagoa was first Latina on FL Supreme Court. Confirmed to CA11 by Senate 80–15. Cuban American from swing state FL + Constitutionalist.

Sure are a lot or folks shilling for her, I don't really get it.

Is it because she's of Cuban ancestry? I keep reading she's Cuban American..... there is no such thing as a Cuban American, she must be one or the other.

Seems like a LOT of identity politics, why would we want to do this?

She's just as qualified as Amy Coney Barrett, but 10x more palatable to swing state voters.

3
CovfefeNegro 3 points ago +3 / -0

How is she more palatable? She seems very much more divisive to me, she's described as a Cuban American..... why is she not described as an American? First generation American, she doesn't have our history of the Rule of Law or morality, seems like such a weird flex to me, why keep on with the race/ethnic baiting? 'Cuban American, palatable'.

RBG was known to be a problem when she was nominated, yet the notion of her somehow being 'PC' or 'palatable' got her seated. She spread genocide thru abortion, openly admitted she wanted abortion used to control 'certain' races/ethnicities, openly devalued our Constitution, openly wanted children to be legally used as sex toys and in so many other ways was completely at odds with all that is America.

Why look to do that again with a 'Cuban American' who is 'palatable'?

If she were simply an American she would have a better pedigree, why pander?

"Palatable" = 80-15 Senate confirmation vote in November.

Amy Coney Barrett only confirmed by a vote of 55-43.

How is she any LESS qualified than Barrett? Because Barrett's family has been here longer??

If they're equally qualified, then why not go with the more "palatable" one...?

I would not consider the two you mentioned as equal entities, first off.

POTUS doesn't need to cater, that choice seems to me would be a throw-back to what is wrong with us today.
