Early Democrats were...kind of all over the board, between north and south. Up through the civil war and towards the turn of the centurty. Roosevelt is when they went hard into social liberalism, and the roots of what we're dealing with now. Bryan and Wilson moved the party towards it, but FDR cemented it all in place with his New Deal. And they gained the working vote in the north, with immigrants - like my Irish great grandparents.

But the era that really defined them was the 50's and 60's. They went from fighting civil rights tooth and nail, to being radicals when people like Hillary graduated from college and entered politics. It's been all downhill since.

Do some reading on it. It's interesting how both parties evolved.
