I wish I could help you, but it's only getting worse the closer we get to the election. There is all the rest of the family and there's me. It's very very lonely. Oh, well.
I have 2 friends who are hardcore leftists, one I've known since kindergarten but we only recently reconnected, well, one we had an amicable ceasefire, we agreed not to talk politics at all (we broke it on one phonecall early on in the dem primary but it was fine).
The childhood friend and I had a huge argument where I constantly was trying to drop it but he refused to and eventually told me to put a timer on for 8 minutes and 46 seconds and "just imagine what it's like to have a police officer's knee on your neck" then I kinda snapped and pointed out how creepy and cultish it was, he rage quit multiple times, degenerated into personal insults and in the early hours of the morning I finally wished him a good night and signed off. He apologized the next day and agreed we shouldn't talk politics. They can't handle it, they're just too emotional.
...where not only did OP tell of getting dumped by their daughter, but many other posters shared similar stories.
I read them all and now I need to hear some uplifting stories of parents being honored and loved by their children of opposite parties, and any cross-ideology friendship stuff.
Do you talk about politics, or avoid it altogether?
