I can't help but see it as an act of malfeasance on the part of the news for using this as fear-porn to drive ratings and as a bludgeon against Trump.
Really frustrating to watch them switch from reporting deaths to reporting cases. And then not mentioning that "cases" are counted even without confirmation, just assumption. Add that to how they fail to make clear that there is a difference between deaths "from" COVID and deaths "with" COVID. And yet, they are all counted as deaths. How have they've been able to get away with this?
It blew my mind to see that the chance of a child dying from this is roughly 1 in 1,000,000. Basically, grab a deck with 1,000,000 cards and then pick one at random, do this only once. That is how unlikely it is that this is going to kill them. Hell, for kids under 18 the flu has a 1 in 337,745 chance of killing them which is still around 2 times less likely than them being killed by lightning.
Literally, ours kids are 5 times more likely to be hit and killed by lightning than to die from this virus.
I'd like to share these numbers with some covidians. How about a pointer to the source of the statistics? (it'll be the first question they ask)
This is my own creation. Pretty simple math plugged into a spreadsheet.
I pulled the data from here: https://covidtracking.com/
In the morning I'll put together a more robust version of this chart with the sources listed below, and then post it here for you to use.
