Furthermore is a “after life“ a uniquely Christian theology? I don’t think so. In fact I’m pretty sure that Jesus was a Jew and so the idea of the afterlife and Christianity is similar if not the same as that in Judaism

Yeah. TLDR Jews have Heaven and Sheol - which is the place of darkness where the souls of those not in heaven are cursed to wander. This jives with the NT description of hell as "outside" heaven. The eternal torment, lakes of fire, etc is all sorta retconned on. But even just being stuck outside heaven, watching the love and unity while being cursed to remain alone on the outside and knowing it's all your fault sounds like eternal torment TBH.
