I can somewhat understand Puerto Rico going for statehood although I am not sure it will garner sufficient state supporters.
As for stinky DC - afford your folks an opportunity to join Virginia vs going through all of the costs and efforts to create a state for such a mundane number of people, plus they cannot take the federal government lands and buildings, nor are members of congress in the Capital area ever under state control.
