It's because Liberals (Canadian) and Democrats (American) are the same thing; Leftists.
You're right in that Liberals/Democrats don't actually support Liberalism or Democracy, they've just used those labels for so long, the definition of the words have nearly lost all meaning.
"Fucking Liberals" is totally appropriate in 2020. Even if you're a 'Classical Liberal' such as myself. I'm staunchly conservative, but being Canadian I've probably been spoon fed enough socialism that certain things don't bother me quite as much as they should (like our healthcare system, booze/weed/porn availability etc).. I also grew up in Quebec, the most Liberal of the Canadian provinces.
