...up until about a year-and-a-half ago...

Early 2019 is when the media really jumped the shark. Between the Covington Catholic school and Jussie Smollet hoaxes, both of which prominently featured the "red MAGA hats", people really began to realize that the media didn't just hate Trump, they hated anyone that even supported Trump.

Before that, the media really only went after people that were sticking their neck out in some way. It was easier to think media stories were at least plausible with things like Charlottesville. But when they fabricate fake stories out of thin air people don't see that as merely "bias" but straight-up lying.

I think that made a lot of moderates realize how extreme the left really was and pushed them away in a big way.
