It's not about "How close is it to the election"

It's about who controls the senate.

Obama never got his SCOTUS pick because the senate refused to confirm it.

It's their right to do so.

However, it's important to note that Obama was never denied (or threatened with impeachment) from selecting his recommended pick for the senate to vote on.

Trump gets to nominate someone.

Period

Whether or not that person gets confirmed is up to the senate.

Isn't it also important to point out that the Democrats changed the rules so it no longer takes a super majority for the nuclear option? Originally this did not include scotus picks or something but the Republicans changed it by using that very thing to push Gorsuch through. I think. It's how I understand it anyways please someone correct me.
