I argue any space journeys aren't profitable in the traditional sense. We only ever went to the Moon for optics, and it took years to come up with the idea to use it as a launchpad.
Still, I can think of several good and bad reasons to be as close as possible to the sun.
Yeah, but then the question is what can you do there that you can't do right here on planet earth. What reason would you have for going there besides "Because I can"? There's not a great deal I can think of right now for doing so.
Probably the best reason would be using the sun as a slingshot, it is the fastest moving planet after all. I doubt it would have much mining potential, though.
For research, either Mercury's ice formations on the hot side, unique solar effects like "light pressure," or the magnetic plasma tornadoes.
