The fact is, the USSR prided itself in their achievements. Olympic gymnasts, world class musicians, composers. Not that any of this was done out of freedom, but for the glory of the party. Very strict training regimen, harshly kicked out for the slightest variation from the routine. Not many flourished like this, but a few came up through the ranks and were WOW.
Hard to find a trumpet player better than Timofei Dokshitzer, for example. Funny name, great player. Amazing at what he specialized in; unparalleled, really.
