My husband was forced to shoot an attacker in self defense and was charged with first degree assault. What we learned is that prosecutors will win in any way they can even if it means ruining a legitimate victims life. We hired a stellar legal team and fought it for 3 years. A week before trial the prosecutor gave my husband a plea deal he couldn't refuse. He was facing a minimum sentence of 15 years if he lost his case. The event happened in a liberal shithole of a city so it was scary to consider who would have been the jury. He conceded to 3rd degree assault with no firearm enhancement (would have added 3 years automatically to his sentence) 3 months in jail and 3 months work release. Voting rights restored upon finishing the sentence and 3.5 years now to restore gun rights. He basically served time for pointing his pistol at his attacker. It wasn't right what happened to my husband but it shed light to how the system works, especially in liberal cities full of crooked prosecutors.
