The article is well written and makes extremely good points. I'd also argue that there's something overlooked. Conservatives in America are not the same thing as conservatives in Europe or throughout history. Just as our patriots aren't nationalists the way Europe's are, our right wing doesn't fit with the French European style of a right wing.
The reason why America is an "enlightened society" has nothing to do with liberalism. We became an enlightenment society without any or barely any liberalism at all while we were a colonial vassal state and when we were a fledging new state.
Here's why and how:
Although our Constitution is ostensively based on Locke and Hobbes, the basis of the social contract in the U.S. was never the social contract as envisioned by Locke and Hobbes. It was always based on these three inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It was never about fairness, equity or equality except in the eyes of God and before the law. It wasn't ever about social justice. It's Euros that think the social contract, in its modern form, must connotate the existence of the welfare state. Americans never believed that for the most part. When Americans do believe it, they tend to frame it as state sponsored charity and not entitlement even though the left and Democrats are constantly trying to tell us it's an entitlement. Conservative Americans have never believed it was nothing other than forced charity.
The social "force" that keeps America together isn't the ethnicity, similar religion or culture as is the case in most European nations. Our enlightened society really is multicultural but not in the way liberals and lefties think it is. It's multicultural of a necessity, which is why we insist on one rule of law applied evenly and fairly. Most European right wingers apply their laws culturally..for instance, France banning the Islamic veil because it's not part of French culture. America has never outright banned any religious garb. In fact America tries to find ways to accommodate it. For instance, the uniforms of police and the military are changed to accommodate women's veils and Sikhs' turbans. however, when it comes to a clean room in a factory, there's absolutely no give. The law comes down on the side of the factory, and it has nothing to do with culture. For centuries, Europeans really never had to deal with any society that wasn't basically......European. So as much as there was friction in Europe, it was always of a European nature. Not so in America. In America, we know we all have huge and vast differences and each group has zealots and fanatics among it trying to do a "winner takes all" plot to control America. The way we keep the fanatics in check, is basically using (abusing?) the opposing fanatics. We have a balance because we have built in counterbalances. For instance, the moment the left tried to put prayer rooms for Muslims in public schools, the head of the Catholic advocacy group said he couldn't wait to put up a crucifix and bring in a priest for Eucharistic Adoration. The protestants wanted a room for Bible Study. There was no grounds by which the schools could allow one and not the others because they are equal before the law. The same is true when a satanist was allowed into the U.S. military. Okay, yes, there's one. One lonely little Satanist chaplain that most soldiers think is weird. That Satanist in bound by the same rules a Catholic chaplain is, no proselytizing looking for converts. The chaplain's role is defined and the Catholic, the priest the rabbi, the pastor and the satanist have to all fulfill the same role. This is not the same as Europe..whereas in Europe, immigrants or "different" people are expected to be different but left out of the assimilation until they aren't different. In the U.S. everyone belongs to two or more different "groups". Marxism is going to have a big problem in America because it's trying to organize all our groups and it'll never succeed so instead, they're going to blow apart the Democrat party. (honestly, my guess is the Democrat party is going to purge them in some way for the 2024 election, just as they did in the 1990's when Clinton called himself a "new Democrat.),
lastly, although the whole identification of being American, is largely conceptual, Americans aren't idealists. Marxists are never going to train all of us to think like them and those that do, can't get their kids to think like them. Americans are pragmatists, not by education or design or even by conscious will. We're pragmatists because we're the ultimate Cartesians. We only value the doing and the making. We never value the whys and we never care about the ideology behind the "it works". We want just enough to get the doing or making to work. The rest is superfluous. We know there is no harmony in the ideological or philosophical sphere and there is no way to drive a nation of individuals who are all so dissimilar for a myriad of reasons to embrace one ideology. The revolution ends because everyone outside the revolution, which will always be a majority, doesn't care about the revolution at all. The only reason the revolution is still hanging around isn't because the marxists are strong. It's because the leaders of our institutions are weak. well, we'll just make more institutions. Old Democrat media isn't going to survive much longer and neither will about half of the colleges or universities and public school just broke it's most valuable service to parents....that is, parents never actually cared all that much about the education, it was always the babysitting they cared about. ya know, free childcare and fun extracurriculars for kids - which is why our public schools differ so dramatically from any other public schools system in the world. It's not really about education. it was about clubs, sports and happy childhood and ice cream.
I know that many liberals are confused, and that they still suppose there are various alternatives before them. But it isn’t true. At this point, most of the alternatives that existed a few years ago are gone. Liberals will have to choose between two alternatives: either they will submit to the Marxists, and help them bring democracy in America to an end. Or they will assemble a pro-democracy alliance with conservatives. There aren’t any other choices.
