I carry a PMR30 daily. 30 +1 of 22mag Belly holster with one extra mag. Thats 61 rds of hornady critical defense. I'd take it over the 7 rounds of anything else that most people carry.
Plus the companies making variants of their handguns chambered for .22 wouldn't be doing so if there was no demand for them. Being easy to clean is also a plus for new buyers.

What you said about pistols stopping power reminds me of what I heard from a video I saw recently. Apparently, in the military (please correct me if I'm wrong), if you're resorting to your side arm, and you have a rifle, that means you did something wrong.

I bought an sks back in February. Have had no issues with 7.62 ammo. 9mm is almost triple what it was where I'm at

Try not to use it too often, as not all guns take steel case well. I've found that steel case works well as stockpile ammo, but at least for me (beyond my SKS of course), I don't rely on it for range day activities.
That's what I've been told too, so it'll stay at the ready for in-the-moment stuff.
Get yourself a rifle too if you can.
