Samsung is/was made in South Korea

46
deagesntwizzles [S] 46 points ago +46 / -0

They actually used to be made in China, but have closed their factories there:

https://archive.fo/W2uPd#selection-3821.0-3825.212

SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics will close its sole Chinese TV factory in Tianjin at the end of November, the South Korean electronics company said Tuesday, part of a greater trend of businesses shifting supply chains away from China.

Production from the factory will shift to Vietnam, Mexico, Hungary, Egypt and elsewhere. The move makes Samsung's global production more efficient, the company said.

Samsung also shut its smartphone factories in Tianjin and the southern Chinese city of Huizhou before the end of 2019, and the company said in June that it would cease production at a computer factory in Suzhou.

Doesn't matter. If America is losing, we're not having it. America must win.

Moltar 8 points ago +8 / -0

I remember when things were Made In America

2
HiddenDekuScrub 2 points ago +2 / -0

They still make things in Korea. But Korea is small and the world is big. Generally the more expensive smartphones and appliances are made there.

RedSocks157 1 point ago +1 / -0

It's a South Korean company but they manufacture stuff all over the world. Samsung is one of the biggest manufacturers in the world these days, actually.

For the TVs, I would bet they manufacure the panels in China still. The other components are made in Mexico, some also probably in Taiwan, but then final assembly occurs in Mexico and it gets a made in Mexico sticker.

The decoupling is happening. Some things will be slower to move away from China than others, just because Asia has such immense manufacturing capacity for semiconductors/PCBs/other electronics, but even that stuff is starting to move to other Asian countries.

I’m totally happy with more things moving to Mexico. Better if it’s US but there’s enough manufacturing to go around - bring it all back from China. It’s better for all of us if Mexico is prosperous too.

Keeps them from coming in.

2
HiddenDekuScrub 2 points ago +2 / -0

This.

Rugar22 2 points ago +2 / -0

We should target the Latin American countries too so they are ALOT less likely to come up.

1
HighVoltage 1 point ago +1 / -0

Lets get it all back. Mexico is a narcostate shithole

1
RedSocks157 1 point ago +1 / -0

It would bring a lot of good jobs to the country, which could prompt Latinos to stay in Mexico for work. Mexican economy improves, everybody wins as long as the cartels don't fuck it up.

Just never let it connect to your Wifi, unless they put a secret 4G transmitter in it

I don't buy anything with a mic or camera built in except my phone.

No alexas, no voice controls, nothing.

4
dingocaloocan 4 points ago +4 / -0

you should really install a version of android without google play services. If they are installed google is always tracking your location / mic

Apple isn't any better especially apps on the store.

This is a really bad suggestion. If you don't believe Apple is tracking you, then you're in for a big surprise. That telemetry data is worth a bundle, and Apple will gladly sell it.

Apple is also horrible for user choice and control. Apple controls your iPhone, not you. You have only one place to install apps from. And if Apple doesn't like the app, you can't have it. That's "doesn't like", not "app is harmful or deceptive", but "doesn't like". Apple thinks it competes with one of their apps? Gone. Tim Cook's sexual advances on the guy that wrote the app got turned down? Gone. It's a Wednesday and one of the Apple app store gatekeepers is bored? Gone.

Google isn't much better, but at least you've got more control over the device and can install apps from other sources than just the Google Play store.

1
dingocaloocan 1 point ago +1 / -0

Apple is even worse when it comes to privacy and you have ZERO control.

4
Sususu 4 points ago +5 / -1

Definitely buy a set top box that you trust instead.

Literally all set top boxes are android, there is no "set top box that you can trust".

Alternatively, you could look for digital signage, TV's built for airports and and other 24/7 applications. It's more exepensive but the software is minimal and the quality is supposed to be better.

deleted 2 points ago +2 / -0
2
slrpnls 2 points ago +2 / -0

Digital signage is great but a lot of times they have no speakers, which is fine because most TV speakers suck.

Shouldn't be made in fucking Mexico either. If you want to sell it in America, make it in America or BTFO.

Manufacturing in Mexico serves as a 2nd 'Wall' of jobs to cut down on illegal immigration.

It also increase the number of US components used in the product.

And most importantly, it denies the Chicoms $ and influence.

18
remember1776 18 points ago +18 / -0

exactly, i was gonna post a comment about that. if there's similar wage jobs in mexico then there's less incentive to illegally cross into the united states. of course it's preferable to have those factory jobs here.

That doesn't include benefits or union dues.

8
DaesDaemar 8 points ago +8 / -0

Yep a thriving Mexico means an easier path for illegals with a sufficient enough upgrade to warrant going there and easy trade with the US. Make the best stuff in the US, and cheap stuff in Mexico.

1
MikeObamasVeineyCock 1 point ago +1 / -0

Still not seeing how I give a shit. Do you work for the koch brothers?

Priorities:

  1. National Security. So no China.
  2. USA manufacturing jobs to all who want them.
  3. Thats it. If #1 and #2 are fulfilled, I'll take a $300 imported TV over a $3,000 domestic. It's American to save money too.

An American TV wouldn't cost 10 times as much as a Mexican built one and it's evident from the prices of cars that are made with high American content versus those with less or none from countries like China or Mexico. The labor is just a small component of the car's cost.

1
everylastjuan 1 point ago +1 / -0

When an American TV becomes available with 100% American parts, you may change your mind. Labor costs exist at all levels of raw material extraction, parts creation, and assembly. When labor is cheap, or is slave labor, then you see the huge price differences.

8
SnowflakeJuice 8 points ago +8 / -0

It's not just about tariffs Korea and Japan announced earlier this year that they were pulling all their manufacturing from China.

Exactly this. Less immigration, less drugs, less cartel

2

Give the people something they want to protect and you get more people resisting the Cartels.

Samsung used to assemble TVs in Mexico and actually in the US as well. I have one of their American-assembled TVs (CRT). Glad to see they're avoiding China.

I do wonder how well electronics companies can avoid China because most of the rare-earth mining (needed for hi-tech) is done there. Maybe deepsea robotic mining?

7
deagesntwizzles [S] 7 points ago +7 / -0

The US actually has a huge rare earths mine: https://www.mining.com/round-top-to-establish-us-rare-earths-supply-chain/

We're going to have that all covered pretty soon; biggest issue at this point is the refinement, as that involves some fairly nasty chemicals.

Realistically, we should do the nasty shit in Mexico.

4
Michael032817 4 points ago +4 / -0

Make them here. Otherwise, we will just turn Mexico into China 2. Not much different, they both traffic drugs. If you think the Mexicans aren’t savvy businessmen just look at the cartels. They will soon have production. We need most production here, including important things like computer chips.

2
DaesDaemar 2 points ago +2 / -0

100% agreed cpu's, ram, etc need to be made here.

1
Olds77 1 point ago +1 / -0

I'd prefer we made them here, but building it in Mexico is still an incredible improvement over China as the Mexicans aren't pointing nukes at us or threatening war with any of their neighbors.

1
Michael032817 1 point ago +1 / -0

True. I just don’t want us complacent.

4
pineapple22 4 points ago +4 / -0

Made in Mexico (boarder towns) are much better for the US vs. Made in Chyna. Majority of TV's are made in Tijuana area for the North American market. Internal components may be coming from Asia, but there are American jobs added when made in Mexico. Management jobs are created for people to live in South San Diego County, not to mention some parts have to be manufactured locally (ie. packaging, plastic injection of the frames - too bulky to transport, etc). US is not cost competitive to make low margin items like this, so wouldn't be economical in US, but Mexico is a partial victory.

Towns like McAllen, TX , Juarez, TX, Brownsville, TX will be a big beneficiary of the growing MX MFG in the "Maquiladora" area, stealing business from Chyna.

3
Rockmanneo 3 points ago +3 / -0

Have anyone bought electronics made in Vietnam?

The word is China sending components to Vietnam to be built and exported from there to avoid the tariff.

3
deleted 3 points ago +3 / -0
2
Roof_Korean 2 points ago +2 / -0

They are just assembled there. Nothing is made.

2
bedub11 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's "assembled" in Mexico. All the parts and boards etc are made in China.

2
Afeazo 2 points ago +2 / -0

We know not all manufacturing is possible within the USA. It would still be a huge boost to the US economy if we moved these production plants into Mexico, and it would also seriously curb cartel activity due to people having work opportunities. Think of how much the domestic trucking industry would boom from something like this. How many basic parts could be shipped over for final assembly in the USA.

Making Mexico great since 2016.

1
awsure 1 point ago +1 / -0

Don't fucking kid yourself. The Mexicans are MAYBE assembling the final components. The manufacturing of the boards, chassis, wiring, et al is still in Asia

1
mostlyatnight 1 point ago +1 / -0

Then illegals aliens will have plenty of job they can go home to. All the rioters who hate America can ether goto jail. Or pay off their debt by doing jobs that supposed Americans won’t do. Call it community service.

2
philandy 2 points ago +2 / -0

Maybe Donald can have Kamala run slave labor again.

1
mostlyatnight 1 point ago +1 / -0

She could be the czar of that. She’s very good at it. A natural even. I mean she is a Descendent of slave owners so it kind of runs in her blood. She’s the kind of person that thinks she’s above darker skinned people.

Eww. I don’t want anything from Mexico that uses electricity.

Have had years of bad alternators and control modules from Mexico. Burned up a whole summer in my teens when granny’s T-Bird needed an alternator from Auto-Shack. (Autozone now a days)

Install, week or less, granny fusses at dad, dad tells me I did it wrong, repeat step one. After the third the old man says he’ll do it himself, with same result. Realizes every alternator is from Mexico, demands a different brand. Gets an AC-Delco. Granny’s 429 is back on the road.

Wonder if Mexico is any better with A.C. 110. Can’t do D.C. 12 that’s for sure!

Assembled in Mexico.

What percentage of the components still are made in China?

1
Ponchik 1 point ago +1 / -0

This is good because fuck China and the only way Mexico is going to get their shit together is with fuller employment and higher wages. Fewer jobs to China, more to Mexico, sounds great.
