My husband was moderate but consistent Dem voter when we first married. It's all because his parents and brother were staunch union-based Dem and they've never waivered from that stupidity. But gradually I worked on him over time. 1st year we were married was 2004 and he said that people who vote Republican are Nazis to which we promptly got into a fight because he was calling me, his wife, a Nazi. He realized that wasn't cool. But I think the red pills really dished out hard during Obama. He voted McCain because he'd always liked him probably because he was a constant shit to elected conservatives (I couldn't stand him since the 2000 primary season) and then Great Depression 2.0 happened. His work dwindled, I couldn't find a job, we couldn't save our house because AHA was a total joke that the banks didn't feel obligated to follow and help people out, and then we had to file bankruptcy and had lost our house by the 2012 election. And he saw that no one gave a shit about people like us who fell through the cracks because they didn't want to criticize the historic black man Presidency. That was a huge red pill for him. Ever since, he continues to be moderate libertarian and consistently votes R as far as I can tell. And he completely understands and parrots a lot of my conservative thinking/ranting to the point where he's been trying to gently red pill his dad at times. I don't think he's consciously trying to, it's more like he's trying to clue his dad in to the fact that MSM is not telling the truth.
