Without a government to enforce contracts and prevent violence, the biggest fish will simply devour everything. It becomes a zero sum game. If you're not willing to kill to protect your livelihood, you will simply be killed to expand someone else's.
Eventually authority returns, but now it's simply the most ruthless warlord in charge protecting their own interests instead of elected officials protecting communal prosperity.
Any illegal trade operates under the tenets of Anarchy due to being outside the law, and always defaults to ruthlessness as a result.
violence is associated with criminalizing drug use/possession, not as a result of using. ie the person cannot seek help and must go to extreme lengths ...
This is completely wrong and ignores the fact that violence is not the only problem with substance abuse.
The area where I work has been overrun by drunks. There are dozens of them drinking in public around our parking lot, in the bushes, on the steps of business. Booze is of course legal and there are lots of free programs they could go to if they wanted help. But it does not prevent these drunkards from being violent, from vandalizing, from littering (bottles and shit everywhere), crapping and pissing in the open. A few days ago, I caught a woman pissing by the driver's side of my car, and I had to crawl in from the passenger side to avoid the puddle she had left for me. The problem is that a homeless shelter opened up down the street from me and it has made the area a hellzone. For the most part, these people are using legal intoxicants but it does not make their behavior any less disgusting or pathetic.
It is naive to think that decriminalizing drug use will make things magically get better.
There is a reason that drugs are illegal and it is not a deep conspiracy to drive hemp producers out of business or oppress the black man by making him go to jail. People forget that drugs used to be legal. We've already tried this experiment.
There used to be cocaine in coca cola. Heroin used to be sold over the counter in drug stores. There were massive social problems and this led to laws to prevent the obvious social evils that they create. And for the most part they worked. It is not possible to completely prevent drug use, but the alternative is worse. Full legalization will lead to a drop in crime - after all you cant have a crime if it isnt illegal just like making theft legal would automatically lead to a drop in property crimes, not because your stuff wouldnt get stolen but because it would not be recorded. But this tactic will not solve the social problems created by drug use, which will become more widespread. After all, if you can buy heroin or meth legally, why not try it. Full legalization will take us back to the way things were in the late 1800s, when drugs were legal and the majority of the population was hooked on something.
Its already legal to be in public while intoxicated. So why aren't the homeless people following that law?
I think drug cartels cause more problems than people socially using drugs. Look at the gangs that have popped up to protect their drug trade. They murder a bunch of people every day over drugs. Take that away and the gangs don't have anything to kill anyone over.
I'd like to know what societal problem were caused back then that you know of.
But I do want to caveat my statement with of course, you have to have restrictions. Workplace, driving, public - no drugs there. Just like no alcohol. That way it takes away the illegality of making and slinging it but it still punishes people who dangerously abuse it.
The homeless people are not following the law because there are no consequences to them. Where I am the drinking, passing out and loitering is not a crime. They can be ticketed but what is the point, they will not and cannot pay. Plus the city does not want a racial incident, if you get my meaning.
They could be removed and the authorities sometimes remove the ones that are passed out and take them to the drunk tank but as soon as they sober up they are released. It is treated as a medical problem and our EMTs spend all their time treating these wretches and my tax dollars fund this cycle. A few good hits with a baton would disperse these idiots, but those days are gone unfortunately.
There was a small green space next to my building and a group of about 30 had taken it over, using the trees as shelter and even setting up tents and tarps. Drunk all the time. The city came and cut down all the trees, to discourage them and at least they moved on. But now they hand out behind our building and on the green space in front of it. Our building management has had to hire security guards to chase them off the property but they just congregate just beyond the property lines.
Regarding the previous societal problems, it was a well known issue with Civil War veterans hooked on laudenum just loitering basically passed out everywhere in the big city. I can look up some of the other issues.
Where I am, and I don't want to be specific, marijuana is legal for recreational use. There are restrictions for driving etc. We actually have two legal marijuana stores a block away from us, on either side. Since they have opened, you can really see the increase in riff raff, rough looking thugs hanging about.
Marijuana is not harmless, but governments have been seduced by tax revenues and duped into thinking that it should not be controlled. I personally know of one person who suffered marijuana induced psychosis from too much use. The symptoms mimicked schizophrenia, complete with visual hallucinations of demons coming to get her. It is more common than people realize, as is actual dependency, though the common wisdom is that it is harmless which makes it harder to recognize and treat the addiction. As more and more people use it more frequently I think you will see a big spike in psychiatric effects from these and other drugs.
We also ignore the social ills that come even when it is legal. Because it is not legal for children, you still have a black market where children are sometimes prostituting themselves to get it. I am personally aware of a case in my city where an 11 year old foster child was prostituting herself to get weed which she then introduced to her 9 year old sister. These are sad little anecdotes but I am sure that they are not unique.
Also. keep in mind that if you legalize drugs there will always be more illegal and dangerous drugs being produced. Think for example of the Russian Kokodril, which actually physically eats you from the inside like a cocodrile and yet has a market. Do we want to legalize that shit?
And if we legalize every recreational drug, why can't I treat myself with antibiotics or experimental chemo drugs if I am sick? Why do doctors get to regulate those drugs, which have at least been tested and might do some good, but junkies can buy cocaine and meth freely?
Many times they are slinging dope to other black people. This is just one of the many hypocrisies of the BLM movement, how is it caring about black lives by encouraging and excusing criminal behavior, which increases the likelihood of police encounters, which would increase the chances of a black person being killed by the cops.
It's why Anarchy doesn't work in general.
Without a government to enforce contracts and prevent violence, the biggest fish will simply devour everything. It becomes a zero sum game. If you're not willing to kill to protect your livelihood, you will simply be killed to expand someone else's.
