Their concerns are more pedestrian, like being pulled over for driving a nice car in a predominantly wealthy liberal area.
How you look changes the service you get. Try doing the same daily routine dressed like a mechanic and then do it in a tailored suit. We have to be honest, being black will put you closer to the mechanic experience than the tailored suit experience. Stereotypes frequently have some grounding in reality and it sucks to be on the wrong end of it.
