I'd be surprised if the core story isn't the same, the tv writers just pulled the rip cord in the 11th hour instead of treating it well. Martin is a joke anyway, wasting what little time he has left on bs NOT finishing his series. Too bad he ripped all of it from English history, Dune, and LOTR.
If he gets to the end of the series I will. And that may be the catch 22. Although some people will buy his next book, interest may be low enough that the publishers won't pay for another (though it may already be contracted so maybe).
5 book? It was originally going to be a trilogy but the story spun out of Martin's control. Now he has a million subplots going on and can't figure out how to tie them all back together.
Was it 3? It's been so long. I started reading the series in the mid 90's and stopped at Swords until HBO then I picked it up again. He's just old and lazy now. At this point, he should hire someone to ghost write it.

Fortunately I've starting writing my first book in a fantasy series I'm doing. Publishers will probably demand I add diversity to it, but it's suppose to be a celebration of Western culture.
