5 book? It was originally going to be a trilogy but the story spun out of Martin's control. Now he has a million subplots going on and can't figure out how to tie them all back together.
Was it 3? It's been so long. I started reading the series in the mid 90's and stopped at Swords until HBO then I picked it up again. He's just old and lazy now. At this point, he should hire someone to ghost write it.
That's exactly it. Martin wrote so many plots he can't get the characters to where he actually want the to be in the end. Who knows if he'll even get another book out before the end...
Fortunately I've starting writing my first book in a fantasy series I'm doing. Publishers will probably demand I add diversity to it, but it's suppose to be a celebration of Western culture.

"And then they all died..." Done. The book is a lot like Twitter: 140 characters, and yet nothing of substance.
