I used to work with a guy who had diabetes & was really overweight. He'd bring in donuts at least once a week, eat candy bars, & drink regular sodas. I asked him if it was wise to do that. He said "I just have to take extra insulin". The diabetic sores were all over his neck & legs, staining his clothes.

Had the exact same conversation with a Type 2 person. With a giant Wendy's frosty in hand, they said "that's what Metformin is for"

Conserve1982 13 points ago +13 / -0

Keto diet in a study reversed type 2 in 80% of patients. “Fat: A Documentary”

14
Dingus 14 points ago +14 / -0

I reversed mine without Keto. It's literally as simple as - dont eat a whole bowl of pasta, just eat half. Dont eat the entire sub, just eat half. Yeah soda has to go. But you can eat just about anything if you focus on portions. That way it doesnt feel like torture.

They should make the keto diet mandatory as a first-line treatment against type 2 diabetes in the medical community.

I smoked for 20 years and quitting it was easier than quitting sugar.

7
Chick-fill-eh 7 points ago +7 / -0

Yea, because you can't just cold turkey carbohydrates. They exist in just about everything, so imagine taking one cig hit everyday while you quit.

4
Work2gethrBiglyOrDie 4 points ago +4 / -0

I quit nicotine mini lozenges easier than hard candy.

Let me guess, you are Type A personality and were constantly eating the stuff all day because it gave you something to do.

3
DebbieinDallas 3 points ago +3 / -0

Sugar hits your brain just like drugs do. Follows the same pathway to the brain. Get the same rush. I’ve been doing better since they closed all the restaurants and I have to cook for myself. Havent had fries in months. Bacon bacon bacon.

1
jive-ass-turkey 1 point ago +1 / -0

Havent had fries in months.

Me too. I bet this alone is responsible for half my weight loss.

Getting off soda has been the biggest battle for me. I made the mistake of trying to go with Coke Zero, and just substitute it. But I had built up so much of a habit that it still had me consuming the same 6-8 12oz cans a day. I ended up having a reaction to aspartame, can't drink anything sweetened by it without getting nausea.

Even turned me off of sucralose sweetened sodas, although I still use it as my preferred sweetener in coffee and tea without issue.

My brain hated it when I removed the sugar train. Was very unhappy with me for quite some time. I was surprised how deeply ingrained the urge seemed to be. Sugar was a different animal. It was like a mild drug addiction, if such a thing is even possible.

You won't be getting DTs, cold sweats, shitting yourself, or wanting to die from sugar withdrawal, however, which is why I say mild.

It's very hard to find foods without a lot of sugar and carbs in them. I'm on the keto diet, and it's almost all meat and veggies.

9
slangin_paint 9 points ago +10 / -1

It is easy to find foods with lots of sugars. It is not hard to find meat and vegetables. They are at the store.

They are amazing buildings with every type of food and delicacy you can possibly imagine, gathered from all four corners of the globe.

They have huge glass refrigerated cases entirely dedicated to various roasted meats. You can just walk up and point to the kind you think you might like and they will give you a free sample of it! Before purchase!

And get this, they've got a cheese case right next to it. Just dedicated to friggin' cheese!

They've got every kind of spice you have ever heard of or read about, I recommend the Badia or Goya brands, but you have an array of choices available to you.

They've got fresh produce, frozen ready-to-cook meals, a myriad of ice creams and frozen delicacies. They have bakeries full of freshly baked breads of every type!

These marvels of civilization are so ubiquitous that the average American has more than one within walking distance from their home, in urban areas.

I'm telling ya, grocery stores are amazing, check em out!

Dingus 5 points ago +5 / -0

This is going to sound snarky but - reduce your portion size and enjoy. It's amazing what your glucose meter will allow when you are being reasonable.

2
DebbieinDallas 2 points ago +2 / -0

Well, yeaaaahhhhh. Bacon, eggs, steak. Repeat. Veggies give you gas. Let the cows eat them first.

Lurking-My-Life-Away 3 points ago +3 / -0

It took me years to finally cut out carbonated and sugary drinks. But now I'm on my way to losing weight and I haven't felt this good in years.

Sugar is a drug.

That is a seriously shitty friend...

8
Barthaneous 8 points ago +8 / -0

What really and seriously needs to be done for health care is eliminate health insurance entirely. Prices would drastically lower.

Health insurance is the Sleazy snake salesman trying to get you to pay them for something that might not necessarily happen but IF it does your not fully covered, youll still have to pay even though you could have been paying hundreds of dollars a month for years.

Its evil. Plain and simple.

A health savings account however is different. But health insurance? Pure evil.

Candida. Been there. Done that. It’s a yeast. Garlic is the deadly enemy of yeast. Buy a fresh garlic clove, dice it up, stick it in your mouth or wherever, chew as long as you can stand it, spit it out. Your Candida will be gone by the next day. Guaranteed. But has to be fresh, raw garlic, not processed or heated.

3
Former_RM2 3 points ago +3 / -0

So, what's the solution? Regulating what people eat? How about people who rock climb, or mountain bike? What does that do to the risk pool?

Be careful.

2
Joe_Btfsplk 2 points ago +2 / -0

Outlaw insurance. Let the market take over. Automatically cuts out all insurance company profits and expenses from the equation.

1
Former_RM2 1 point ago +1 / -0

Why don't we just go back to the system we had in the early 00s, or the 90s, or the 80s, or the 70s?

2
Joe_Btfsplk 2 points ago +2 / -0

I don't know, I might trade a limb for a piece of that cake.

1
DebbieinDallas 1 point ago +1 / -0

Doesnt that cake look delicious? It’s probably a mix, but still...that icing looks like to die for. Wish I had the recipe. I am getting triggered. I feel it coming on. My saliva is running...it’s like getting a boner if I were a guy...I keep swallowing to try and control it.....I’m a goner...going to the fridge now....need chocolate...emergency...

9000ENERGY 2 points ago +6 / -4

I’m all for universal health insurance, as long as everyone who gets it is a US citizen, and he/she can pass a physical fitness test.

13
Kozio_ 13 points ago +13 / -0

Do you like helicopters? Small amount of communism is still communism friend

2
9000ENERGY 2 points ago +2 / -0

I get it, but with the same argument you can say that if you don’t pay enough taxes, the fire dept won’t come to your house.

We live in a country where there are social programs. Food stamps for example: it’s cheaper for us, productive members of society, to subsidize a portion of the (Legal citizen) population’s nutritional needs, than to have starving people robbing us in the night. Jailing then all and then feeding them is inherently more expensive thank throwing them a proverbial bone.

We should have physical fitness tests anyway, as a healthier population would reduce everyone’s overall medical insurance costs.

  1. Why would that cause amputation? That's fucking intense.

  2. That cake looks insanely good

1
Red37 1 point ago +1 / -0

I used to work at a hospital known for its cardiac work. It was a crossed from a local fast food chain. Every day You would see people wheel chaired out to their waiting cars after their heart surgery and then see the car pull into the drive through.

1
terranplayer 1 point ago +1 / -0

I was at my chiropractor's office and was listening to this morbidly obese patient describe their pain. My favorite part was "well, my arm hurts a lot when I lift my soda to take a drink." People are insane.

1

So, as I ponder the stock photo of disgustingly luscious food porn, I wonder...was the amputee Af-Am?

1
Olschoolponcho 1 point ago +1 / -0

Nah, this is a drop in the bucket. Malpractice lawsuits and greed in general have made any type of health service stupid expensive. An ambulance ride should not cost 1800 dollars.
