Tampering with mail is a federal offense. I wouldn't touch it myself. Document, report, but otherwise do not interfere.

The chain of custody should not involve you in any way. Don't even think about touching evidence that important.
Think of it this way... If you found a dead body in the dumpster, would you pull it out before the cops showed up?
If it’s in the garbage, is it technically still mail?
