.....I asked if I could have the position that actually counts the votes. She told me that those spots were already filled, she thinks. So i am getting the key that unlocks all the voting supplies at the polling place and I am the only judge allowed to have a cell phone on me, in case they need to get a hold of me. I also will have all the other duties assigned to an election judge, which I have no clue about. I need suggestions on what to look out for.

Chain of custody stuff would be my first concern.
Where are ballots coming from? Where are they going? Are a whole bunch of them filled out identically or similarly, right down to the way the ovals are filled in?
Also, get to know your fellow judges. What are their names? What do their Twitter accounts look like?

Great! Yes, familiarize yourself with the judges. When I did it, they ran a tape at the end of the night with the totals, uploaded the info to the county election office, then sent physical ballots on. I always asked for a copy of the tape. Don't know if its done the same where you are.

Honestly, nothing will happen inside the polling areas. Everything is done in pairs of 2 or more, with at least 1 Republican and 1 Democrat. If you want to concentrate your efforts, pay attention to the crates as they leave and make sure they get to their destination correctly and not tampered with.

No one but the voter is allowed to touch their ballot. I have witnessed "observors" handling ballots and talking to voters, and neither is allowed.
