It was clearly foolhardy to risk getting your legs cut off. At the very least chain yourself to the track with some slack so you can get a few feet out of the way.
Be sure to jump out in front of it quickly though while they are still moving slow.
Trains take forever to speed up, so if you jump out quickly they wont have time to hit the gas and you will be more successful.
