I also was under the impression he was given the gun when he got there and that he didn't cross state lines with it but I could be wrong. The gun apparently belongs to one of his friends (who themselves lives in Wisconsin), and they gave him the gun after he arrived to defend the store (which he regularly commuted to for work, despite it technically being across state lines, simply because he lived close to the state border and it was a short drive from his house).

I would expect Kyle would know the laws if he was legal to possess it. It's legal at 12, if you're hunting with adult supervision. The distinction at 18 is you can open carry a handgun, and get a CCW. There's another distinction at 16, and I'm not sure what that is. Kyle was also on private property, by the request of the owner. That may come into play?
