There is some weird ritual where the infertile wife holds the handmaid down while the husband impregnates her and then they raise the child as their own. As far as dystopian novels go, it wasn't a very good read. What I took away from it is that people want kids and if the human population ever declines and childbearing women are scarce, people will do anything to make babies.
