Jesus never told them to defend themselves or anything. It was to fullfil prophecy and when they told Jesus that they had two swords he said "it is enough". The whole speech was about how they would have to watch out for their own well-being when He was gone. If the swords had been for just a prophecy-fulfilling moment, he wouldn't have said anything about selling anything for swords they already had.

If you think that Jesus made statements that did not have multiple meanings or that he did not (often) speak in metaphor (when not telling parables), you don’t understand Jesus at all.
He spoke in metaphors constantly and even when saying things literally there were often layered metaphorical meanings.
