I think people are passionate about a lot of things that they don't make a career out of. A surgeon is a specialized career. That's why they make so much money. Its not easy and not everyone can do it. The better you are the more you make. You nor I can know anyone's motives for doing what they do. But I dont see many surgeons offering to work for minimum wage (which would benefit the hospital) just bc they love the job.
And my original question was, if a surgeon was offered twice as much money to do menial labor, do you think he would accept? It would be much less stress without the threat of being sued for malpractice. He might not be passionate about it but it would pay more. Some people are just passionate about making money. That's not a bad thing.
It has everything to do with communism. You're saying someone would take more money in a "capitalist society". People will want more regardless of the society. That's human nature. You think they're aren't self serving, greedy people in communist societies? There certainly are, they are just kept at bay by a much more greedy self serving government.
So, if people were paid twice as much to be (for example) a janitor, you think people would still choose to be surgeons?
