My wife’s family was catholic and very conservative. In my younger years I was liberal. It caused some turmoil at first but I actually came around. Thing is being connected to them, seeing how great their family is etc is a lot of why I became a conservative in the first place.
But now they are all crazy liberals lol. I’m not sure how this happened but I really think it’s to do with the catholic guilt.
More than likely they've been convinced that the left and its socialistic tendencies are equivalent to compassion and empathy, highly regarded qualities to any believer. Given how Catholics regard the position of Pope, all it takes is the right puppet to push an agenda for those that are less likely to think for themselves.

I've often thought about starting my own Christian denomination with no singing. You just show up, preacher gives his sermon, you say a prayer, and you go.

Like him or not, a pope is only infallible in matters of "faith and morals" and not science or politics. That Pope Francis has referred to abortion as "too political" to weigh in on but he goes off about walls and guns basically means that we've all tuned him out.
That's before you get into all the weird technicalities that may or may not make his entire papacy illegitimate.
Catholics can disagree with the pope on matters of prudential judgement. Trust me I am both a super strict Catholic and a gun nut. Catholics only believe that the Pope is infallible in matters of church doctrine while speaking "ex Cathedra." (Which I believe has only been used twice in 2000 years for the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary)
