First, Protestants never had a Crusade. Without Roman Catholicism, we'd all be Islamic.
Secondly, the Christianity of Northern Europe and the UK is heavily, I mean HEAVILY influenced by the Pagan mythology that went before it. We still name the days of the week after our Old Gods. This is why there's such a schism between Roman Catholicism, Orthodox, Coptics, and later Protestantism. Different people, different versions.
Thirdly, Protestantism is (like Islam) tightly linked to their fundamental religious authority - the Judean Biblical text. Catholicism at least is able to assimilate modern science because their authority is the Vatican and the text can be "interpreted". A Protestant population would be doomed to believing the Flood and other such nonsense which only serves to grow a foundation of Magical Thinking in the population.
Fourthly, there's nothing in the Bible that generates the "Protestant Work-Ethic", which has been amazing for the establishment of civilization throughout the New World - that comes from the Scandinavian and Germanic peoples who just so happen to be Protestants,
If anything, the West comes from our Pre-Christian culture I.E. it is fundamental to our biology.
