You are totally correct. Same here as from NYC. We get all the liberal uni grads that group up elsewhere. Sure most are from the surrounding suburbs and but many come from middle America to chase their Broadway dreams or were outcasts in some way back home, they are so naive and disconnected from the community so they essentially exist in a bubble. They only interact with their new urban family that is usually from the same mindset. Meanwhile if they grew up in the city they could have a deeper breath of perspective in terms of people you interact with.
I live up the 101 a little way from you and if California wasn't so damned rotten and corrupt I truly believe President Trump would win here. California has a solid 35% Republican base. It's my opinion that percentage has grown considerably.
If it weren't for illegal votes and ballot harvesting, the elections would be much closer. Getting outside of the major urban areas is great because many people are just common sense normal. Humbolt County is very red, even Marin, Sonoma, and Napa have tons of conservatives. The Bay Area is rotten to the core, but there are good people here too.
