Just because an entity calls itself "The Church" doesn't mean jack. If anything, "The Church" over the past two millennia has ranged from the hired hand that ran away when the wolves came to straight up false prophets. John 10: 1-18. Jesus is the Shepherd AND the gate, his sheep hear his voice and enter into salvation. No need for a middle man.
Christ being the head of the Church is only one way he describes his relationship with his followers. The church is also called his bride, his sheep, mustard seeds, seeds sown into good ground, etc.
