Why do far left Democrats love to claim they're centrists? Joe Biden is a Socialist. If you support him, you are not a centrist.
Because if that secret gets out they lose all the Midwest, completely. Oh, and probably a portion of the Northeast. Oh, and they lose the current swing states too. If they can't convince the older union-Dem voters that they aren't insane socialists trying to make firearms illegal and ban all fossil fuels, they'll lose them all. This would be a Mondale-type loss for them.
On the other hand, they can't do much more than just say that they are totally centrist, because now the socialists are activated, organized, and watching their every move (thanks Obama). If they can't also convince the younger soc-Dem voters that they are indeed insane socialists, then they'll lose their campaign staffs, volunteers, and donors. Huge populous blue states are now mostly socialist, yet they have huge Republican bases as well. Losing the soc-Dems in these states would lead to a Mondale-type loss.
