Inb4 someone calls me a shill or a faggot - look at my post history.
Did we all of a sudden start supporting total banning of immigration and not a merit based immigration? If you look at Trump's official policy stance on immigration on the white house website you'll clearly see that's what he's seeking to achieve. Trump's grandparents were immigrants, lest we forget. I'm all for not allowing the dumbest, poorest or most violent to come into the country, but to say that immigrants have produced no value is farce.
To answer the question, it's simple: the countries from which these people come from are rife with corruption to the point where these people are powerless and truly cannot effect change. They seek a better life in a country that has proven if you put in the work you can make something of yourself. This is why brain drain is a real issue. I get the argument that "what if they stay there and actually do something about the corruption" - well it's easy to say when your life hasn't been threatened by having a love one killed for their political associations as a death threat to continue to tow the party line (which is what happens in Iran, and all the other shithole countries). You've seen what happens to some of these countries that have endured revolutions only for a new, different but equally corrupt party or faction taking place of its predecessors. The revolutions of France and the US were so unique to the point where simply saying you need a leader and smart people to turn the tide reveals your own ignorance on the extremely complicated matter of changing and "uncorrupting" a country.
That's true, but that's not the only benefit of immigration. The talk you linked is great (watched it many times) but the biggest flaw in his argument is that the problem in their country is fixable within one generation. Again like I mentioned, when your country has rampant corruption, no real rule of law, and is controlled with heavy military presence, it becomes an insurmountable obstacle for them to overthrow their government and institute democratic values such as freedom, liberty, and the like. The French and American revolutionaries are massive historical figures who have greatly altered the course of history. To think that those personalities of strength and bravery are so common as to believe these immigrants have that power is simply to be ignorant of the statistical odds of such a thing happening. For every one successful leader there are 100s if not 1000s of failures that have preceded them. That's called the success bias.
Some people just don't want to be harassed and want to provide for their families. They don't want to sacrifice themselves or their families when the odds are greatly stacked against them. This is why people immigrate. This is why there are Mexican, Korean, African, etc immigrants that vote for Trump because they all want the same thing his administration does: merit based immigration.
I agree that when you have talent leaving your country it worsens it, and that it is a vicious cycle, but can you really blame some of these people?
I don't want rapists, thieves, illegals and abusers in my country. I want smart people who add value, and immigrants, over the course of American history, whether you like it or not, have added value to American values and the American dream. As of late, with Bush's and Obama's lax immigration policy, there are obvious deficiencies and reasons for why there has been a rampant increase in illegal immigration and immigration that has only benefited larger corporations or silicon Valley sfart ups, and that's what Trump is trying to solve which I completely agree with.
I like your style in this message, so I wanna see what you think about this:
I'm on the fence between a Trump-Republican stance on immigration and a hard moratorium. I hear you that immigrants, in many instances, provide value to the society they enter in a way they were unable to in their former, more corrupt country.
If you view "skilled labor force" as something to always be increased, then merit-based immigration policy makes sense. But all things in the economy require an equilibrium. Right now, skilled labor wages are going down. Increasing that supply of workers through immigration would worsen this issue. Why not protect the wages of today's Americans rather than provide a decaying wage to new Americans?
Should just let in the richest and most qualified. Just like a company. Send your resume, your bank statements, some references. Go on probation for a few years with no benefits. If you don't work hard your out. Work hard and fit in with the culture your given citizenship.
Because some people are better than the s***hole countries they come from.
Our president is not anti-immigration, he's pro merit-based immigration.
Our first lady is an immigrant.
It is possible to want to fix the broken immigration system without being anti-immigration. That is what our president is about. I suggest getting on board.
Sure. We can also disagree without undermining leadership, like so many people working in the White House that wanted to talk crap when their work day was over.
There's no problem with different opinions, but if we're having a perpetual campaign rally then it's probably better to not undermine that by sounding like what liberals stereotype us as when that isn't what President Trump is.
Love this.
Well, there are a bunch of ancient indian burial grounds here.
Dun dun dunn....

They specialize in murders, and frequently rapes.

Something to remember: the problems people have in their own countries are not the responsibility of our country to solve.
It is not the responsibility of a government to give out alms, not even to its own people.
The question the US government should be asking is what immigration policy serves the interests of the actual American people, not the immigrants.
As individuals, even as a society, we should care about the good of each human being. But that is not the government's responsibility.
