Thanking people for their service makes them very uncomfortable. It's really hard to respond to. Instead, say "welcome home." or "glad you are safe." or "stay safe" if active duty or first responder.
I will get that now and then when I stop by the store after work and it sometimes catches me off guard and I usually just smile and say thank you. But I get it, both here and IRL.
