Biden's dementia probably went way downhill after he got the nom. He probably went past being functional after they put him up. Their plan was actually pretty decent in theory. Keep the dem base, get the far leftists in line to vote blue no matter who, and have Biden recapture enough of the working class union white voters in states like PA, WI, MI, etc. Biden sucks in a lot of ways but he used to be damn good at playing "good ol' lunch pail union Joe from Scranton".
Either the dems figure on it being another 2016 close election where they could flip a few key states with "found" ballots from dem districts or they plan on taking an L this time around. Or maybe they truly believe the polls and that "everyone hates Trump, his base is abandoning him in droves, only the hardcore rednecks still support him".

If you take another look at Biden during the Democrat debates and look at him now, he has RAPIDLY declined even since then.
