I learned not to count down. For my kids, counting down meant I did not yet mean business, so they did not have to pay attention, yet. By the time I'd counted down, I'd be pissed. I learned that I have to address it immediately, before I have time to get annoyed.

My wifes aunt is a child psychologist. She has two sons. When they were growing up she would dress them in pink, give them dolls to play with, did everything to "not impose a gender" on her son's. She banned depictions of guns because she didn't want her sons involved in violent play. Then one day, when they were camping one of her son's picked up a stick and started shooting one of his cousins, and proceeded to wrestle with them and all the classic boy things.
To her credit she backed off of pushing the gender neutral stuff on her kids after that. Shes still crazy left though.
One son grew up and studied to be a cop, then the world started hating cops, and he just didn't want to deal with the hate, he's an insurance adjusted. I’ve seen little boys put on their sisters sparkling party shoes and run around playing in them for a day. And if no one notices or makes a big deal about it then usually the boy doesn’t wear them again after that.
Kids respond to how their parents respond to what they are doing. If a boy puts on his sisters party shoes and the parent start making a big deal about it then the kid will keep wearing girl stuff because he’s getting special attention from his parents when he does. He’s being affirmed to continue to do so. It’s pretty simple actually.

There's a reason why ever since toy companies became a thing that they marketed stuff with lighter colors (pink, baby blue, yellow, lavender, etc) towards girls and darker colors (reds, blacks, greens, dark blues, etc) towards boys. And why boys are typically the ones to be marketed cars, planes, action figures while girls are marketed dolls.
It's because they like them!
Toy companies do research and if there was a significant amount of boys who liked dolls or a significant amount of girls who didn't like pink or dressing up then they wouldn't market them as such!
