They fact they were going on at real companies and not just tech and universities is crazy to me. That makes it look like a very well funded and malevolent thing rather than nutcases forcing it through.
Covering their asses from lawsuits
When someone decides to sue them for a sexist/racist/whatever workplace environment they can say ‘but every employee attended diversity training’ and they absolve thenselves.
