Yep, the missionaries go and provide new equipment, teach everyone how to farm, leave, and then come back to find the equipment sold and the farm STILL just a mud mound. Emphasis on the "still", because they do this year after year and nothing ever changes.

Have you ever considered that the missionaries or other aid organizations might be part of the problem? In order for a program to be successful long term at least three conditions need to be met.
The group needs to be willing to change and try new practices. If you always do what you always do, you always get what you always get. Something has to change in order to break the current cycle. If a group does not recognize that a problem exists or does not have an interest in improving, it is unlikely that lasting improvement can be achieved.
The development program has to be custom designed for the specific community. Often development agencies go into an area with a cookie cutter plan that doesn't take into account the specific circumstance of the people involved: "We think that you should grow/do X, and that will solve the problem." However, X is totally foreign to the group, and it just doesn't mesh with the reality of the group.
There must be a level of stability within the region. It doesn't matter how well #1 and #2 are done if a warlord is just going to move through the area within a few months and destroy everything. People cannot do or learn long term planning if they don't live in a secure environment.

There have been many books written from the last 200 years about exactly this. I have an old leather bound book, I will try to find it, that was a published journal of French missionaries that went to Africa for 15 years to teach them to farm. After the Africans killed about half of the group for being witches, the survivors fled back to France. There are dozens of stories in the book where they would teach a village how to raise goats, corn, beans and tomatoes, stay two years, then come back a few years later to literally nothing. Either warlords would raze their village or the villagers would fail miserably on their own.
The funniest story was about a larger village in Angola where they planted huge crops of wheat and corn and they never would produce any product, but some of the villagers started getting fat. They would sneak out into the field and eat all the early buds off the crops at night.
I read an article--years ago--about how African languages don't have a past tense (and I think future tense) so they can't think past the present.

The payload to earth orbit is about 10% but to get to Mars, you're down to 1%.
Even if you get to Mars with any significant infrastructure, you're still living in a bubble because it's so harsh. It would take quite the natural disaster to make Earth less hospitable. The magnetosphere, gravity, natural resources (including atmosphere) are huge advantages vs. mars.

Foreign Aid is mostly bullshit anyways and just a way for local contractors to get their hands in the governments pocket. I read about it a while back and from what I saw all the aid and supplies by law must be purchase domestically and then shipped to whatever country it's going to. But if the goal is to feed hungry people that's the most inefficient way to possibly do it. It would actually be much cheaper and effective to send money oversees and purchase supplies in that part of the world instead.
But of course, then these shipping companies and contractors that supply the goods don't get their billions.
There's a lot of talk about 'Africa this' and 'Africa that'. The first thing is that it's not some poor starving country - it's a continent. There are 54 different countries there. In fact, there are probably even more regions, but if you look at a map, you see nice clean lines because the colonial powers pulled out a ruler and divided it up.
I'm not going to go all 'But muh colonizers' - the west brought plenty of advances, too, but it certainly wasn't all good. What we have now is what we have. There is endemic corruption, poverty, starvation, and none of those things is easy to fix because you have cultures that were suddenly thrust from primitive conditions right smack into the middle of 20th century civilization.
There's a reason that the fictional Star Trek Federation has a policy of non-intervention. Perhaps we would have done / would do differently if we suddenly discovered a secret populated continent now. But I'm probably kidding myself.
In any case, there is some truth to the 'feeding Africa makes more hungry Africans'. I'm not sure what the alternative is though - is it morally right to let them starve to death when we have the means to feed them? Should there be mandatory birth control coupled with raising life expectancy? I don't have the answers. The reality is that a bunch of different groups with overlapping and conflicting goals control the situation. The Warlords don't want to give up power. The Catholics don't want birth control. The oil companies want to extract resources.
There are plenty of smart people in the continent of Africa, spread across a bunch of different countries. Without a doubt, given education and resources, there are a number of great scientists and thinkers to be discovered.
But keep in mind that the population of the continent of Africa is 1.34 Billion people. Yeah there are a bunch of smart ones, maybe even millions, but there are 10s to hundreds of millions of backward, primitive ones that cause trouble for the rest.
An exercise for the reader: How do you fluidly bring 100s of millions from poverty and illiteracy (and previously, almost neolithic conditions) to the 21st century?

And just like in the west, seemingly well-intentioned western Leftists have caused plenty of harm under the guise of 'helping'. - There was one country (maybe several) where the local farmers were devastated because U.N. intervention destroyed the local markets for food, instead purchasing from large multinationals who received large contracts to provide supplies. Now the local populations are dependent on aid, which further sustains the bureaucracy and kickbacks to the local politicians ensure this continues.
I think the West needs to enable the people in all of the countries of Africa to root out corruption. Right now banks look the other way and so do governments. My understanding is that it can be very difficult to get ahead in such countries because you need to bribe virtually everyone or be well connected. People with education and means see the hopelessness, so they emigrate to other countries to be successful, thereby extending the problems for another generation.

China is heavily invested in Africa and their investment has been more effective than ours. For some reason Americans believe delegating money fixes problems. Money alone was never the answer.
Our investment is designed to keep Africa dependent. For leftist it's win win.

Before I moved, I belonged to a church that was in fellowship with some churches in Africa. You have no idea of the scale of the spiritual battle they are fighting. They don't read Ephesians, they live it evey day. Christian in the US have gotten complacent. We are now confronted with the same forces that they have for years. This can only mean that their battle has become that more heated. We need to pray for them with all power and in doing so we prepare ourselves for the comming battle. Don't be fooled, what we are witnessing is a spiritual attack straight from the father of lies and I am not talking about sleepy.
