That was incredibly unnecessary considering he was in the middle of openly explaining himself to the officer who he was talking to. The fact that he was swarmed like that, and in context he was safe inside his house and it's on video here with the cop saying to just come out and everything will be fine.... Really shows that this story is fucked.
Also, if he was suicidal, why hip check him to the ground for absolutely no reason? This was assault - he was complying, showed he had no weapons, was peaceful, etc.

My fight-or-flight instincts would have been kicking in full tilt, but he submits right away and immediately puts up his hands. He didn't go, "Nah, I don't wanna be arrested today." He didn't go for a weapon or the cop's weapon. He just let due process run it's course.
