And probably the only reason it took them so long is because they are a decent person so they automatically assumed that the other side was decent too and wasn't purposefully working to undermine the country in every way they possibly could. Therefore they discounted the evidence that might have led them to the conclusion sooner.
The unthinkable is unthinkable and for a truly decent person such villainy is unthinkable. On top of that they are not wrong! our situation is dire!!
