It actually made him famous.

He started in the WWF as Rocky Maivia, a very bad wrestler with no ability.

Then three factions started up in the WWF, one for "militant black people", another for "militant Hispanics" and another for "militant biker gangs".

Rocky Maivia joined the Nation of Domination, did all the Black Power stuff to the crowd, then took control of the group from its leader Farooq and told everyone he was now The Rock.
