Hell I’ve known guys who have thrown their CIB in the trash after the awards ceremony because they felt that the way they earned it on that deployment wasn’t worthy (one dude felt that getting shot at in an up-armored truck with a CROWS in the turret wasn’t shit compared to when he was initially awarded his as a young private in Iraq).
If he only knew that some chick at a FOB who heard an IED blast got one he’d reconsider. Know a lot of guys who feel that way about their Purple Hearts. Fuck it, being in combat deserves all kinds of hardware might as well take what you can get.

It’s always fun watching the really green soldiers panicking while I’m more pissed that I got woken up. Throw in some dip and try and go back to sleep. I swear I’ve met more nerds/geeks doing Infantry shit than I did majoring in Math in university years later.
I can attest to this. Spent 10 years in, went to war several times and saw heavy combat in two deployments. I’m a huge fucking nerd. A. Because I love being a nerd and B. Don’t care what anyone thinks because I got nothing left to prove. I think in my younger days I cared what people think
