Volume. Previously we've never had a potentially election-changing number of votes that will take longer to count. Now we will.

Because the scale has never been tried. The states used to it have had a long time to perfect. It's too late to try a new system for states that haven't done it before on the eve of the election.

Washington State has used all mail-in voting for almost two decades, and in the primaries this year it took them NINE DAYS to finish counting the votes (I was posting reports on this as it was taking place). Ballots can be mailed with a postmark on election day and take several days to make it to the vote-counting center. Ballots can also be dropped into ballot boxes until 8pm on election day, and drivers have to drive around the state collecting them. Then, each ballot has to be opened individually and have a human verify that the signature on the ballot matches the signature on the voter reg or drivers license. NINE DAYS to count the primary votes (about have the number of votes in a presidential election).

Yeah, and just think how long it's gonna take those states who just stood up all mail-in voting this year!!

Exactly! Washington is bragging about its wonderful system and about how a bunch of other states have been coming for advice on how to set up a system like Washington's. NINE DAYS in a state with a lot of experience with mail-in voting. Just imagine what's going to happen in newbie states.

The volume of ballots with covid distancing rules for workers means that you can't pack a room full of vote counters PLUS you have many more ballots that need counting.
