You don't need a physical wire to communicate with people for an hour, this isn't the 80s. All you need is a tiny phone and a hearing-aid sized device in your ear. Without that earpiece there's no way to hear anything.

The original point of a "wire" was to run a connection between an inner-lapel mic to a recorder which fits in a lower pocket.
