I was telling some people this yesterday.

The strategy isn't to convert people to Trump. If you're not voting Trump by now you're not gonna change your vote unless Jesus Christ came down and told you to.

The strategy is to deflate enthusiasm, get less turnout (legally) from Biden/anti-Trumpers.

Divide the radical left, let Biden fumble over his own plans. The entire point is to get those lackluster Biden voters to think "honestly, he isn't really better than Trump" and sit out the election.

Biden has made the message "vote for me cuz I'm better than Trump" but if you can paint him a lethargic, corrupt & inconsistent you're going to dissuade his lackluster base from going to the polls.

bidensmissingbrain 129 points ago +129 / -0

If Jesus Christ came down from heaven and told people to vote for Trump they'd just condemn him as a white supremacist, Chris Wallace would insist Trump denounce him, and then they'd go re-crucify him.

They would use corrupt FBI agents to arrest Jesus with a no knock warrant - assign Judge Amy Berman who would put a Gag order on him.

Exactly how the Spanish inquisition went. If Jesus was there then it would have gone like:

"We are good. Defying us means you're evil!"

"Umm, hi. I don't condone this." -Jesus

"Burn the imposter!"

Exactly. You're going to be better off convincing them NOT to vote.

There are IG feeds and posts literally titled

"So, You're reluctantly voting for Biden" I'm seeing this more and more. Even comments. I have little doubt, and high hopes, by the time this election rolls around, Biden voters will be so fucking over 2020 they just won't GAF and stay inside. Hence mail in, and tbh...I wouldn't be surprised if a TON of people are just too inept to mail it ON TIME.

These are the same people who expect everything to be solved for them. They'll expect to have their vote counted and it WONT. Killary actually had a chance in fair election, they still cheated. And he still WON.

Enthusiasm is through the roof. Dems jumping ship to realize they're Republican or at least NOT voting Democrat this year (TONS will we ever know the true total?) and they needed to get off the koolaid.

Full Red November

Spot on. I don't know how this strategy will hold until the election but I guess we'll see. Trump split Biden's progressive base (most of that damage was already done to be honest), but he got him clearly on camera in front of millions having a shot at Bernie, dissing the green new deal and socialized healthcare.

Also Trump brought Biden down to his level. Trump was always going to be aggressive it's who he is and those chips have been on the table now for 4 years. Seeing Biden get down and dirty contradicts his "decency" shtick big time. I'm seeing a lot more arguments that I saw in October/November 2016 about both candidates being bad, undesirable etc. This massively helps Trump. Almost no Trump voters will be changing their vote, but left progressives will and unenthusiastic voters will too.

26
OranjeBlanjeBlou 26 points ago +27 / -1

These are really good arguments and changed my view on the debate.

22
HumblePig 22 points ago +22 / -0

If you want a calm, cool, dispassionate candidate who will be composed and level headed, neither candidate will please you. Anyone considering Biden can no longer declare his temperament superior. Both are rude, angry men.

If you want a candidate willing to get in there with force of personality and get things dirty and raw and messy, both went for it, but Trump won that angle hands down.

Trump and Biden are playing the same character type, Trump just does it better.

17
Salty_Samurai 17 points ago +17 / -0

You know, you have a point. I work with hospital patients and the debate was on in one of the rooms last night. I asked how it was going, they said “just as you’d expect, two old men bickering with each other”. Didn’t think much of it at first but realized they weren’t talking about how well Biden was doing.

I completely agree. Ever since Biden started telling voters that they're full of shit and calling them "lying dog faced pony soldiers" I've been saying he's basically Will Ferrel in the other guys saying to his campaign manager, "Ohhh I thought you said 'Bad Cop/Bad Cop". He's basically doing a very poor Trump imitation hoping to get the same results he did in 2016, but the exact opposite would probably be the best approach.

Also...

2
roothog 2 points ago +2 / -0

Trump's entire strategy is to cut through the Democratic coalition.

That's why the minority outreach is having such positive returns, a +5% gain with Black voters in 2020 from 2016 is huge, combine it with +8% with Hispanics, game over.

Shave off at the margins, but overall the Republican reachout to Dem base like this will reverberate for decades. If the Black vote eventually gets split 75-25 or 80-20 in another cycle or two, the racism racket is done. The Dem cartel is defeated. The whole reason they do this nonsense is to deflect issues. Can't run the racism gambit if suddenly GOP has a significant block of loyal Black voters.

22
DeplorableWeWin 22 points ago +22 / -0

Potus base is already enthusiastic and on board, potus is appealing to the people on the fence And moderates and like the post says is dividing bidens base as well.

We are not gonna see completely savage trump in the debates unless they really attack him, he’s going for the moderate and independent voters not happy with the democrat party or the democrat lockdowns or Marxism and riots

20
nutspanther 20 points ago +20 / -0

If the strategy was to divide the democratic base, then I think that the debate was a success. If it was to convince moderates and fence-sitters, then I think it was a failure. Most fence-sitters are there because Trump "isn't very presidential". This sentiment boils down to he elaborates a lot, he insults his opponents, and he doesn't show traditional PC decorum.

I think Trump was Trump last night, and that reinforces their view that he "isn't presidential". If the play was for moderates, it wasn't executed well in my opinion.

Time will tell and the more I think about the debates, I think he performed better than I did initially. There were moments that I thought he had slam-dunk policy and record based answers that he chose to not use.

16
WishdoctorsSong 16 points ago +16 / -0

If Trump was unpresidential then Biden was downright petulant. Anybody who was thinking voting Biden would be some imagined return to decorum just had that notion blown up last night.

3
nutspanther 3 points ago +4 / -1

I agree, but the "what about Biden?" argument doesn't really apply here. The problem that fence-sitters have is about Trump and his mannerisms not Biden and his.

I've heard similar comments from suburban "I wish he'd be nicer and tweet less" people. He may be planning to use the next two debates to capture moderates like he did last year, but you were spot on. If this debate was to divide the left, he accomplished his goal. If this debate was to win the center, he did not.

Leftist need to decide: 4 more years of Trump then their new candidate, or if they vote Biden it will be EIGHT years until they can choose their candidate at which point it would obviously be Harris who they also hate making it TWELVE years to get a lefty they really like. For a true leftist, it's better to vote Trump and yake another crack in 4 years.

I hope the town hall format in debate 2 gives Trump the opportunity to talk more about churches being shut down, the second amendment, free speech, the Dems radical views on abortion, etc. While I understand healthcare is important, it's not an unalienable right and it doesn't keep me up at night.

2
brutustyberius 2 points ago +2 / -0

Trump did real well in the COVID town hall he did on fox. Wife is a Trump fan but hates the bravado. She said while watching, “That’s the Trump that people need to see.” Calm, articulate. He came across very well that day.

3
2016TrumpMAGA 3 points ago +3 / -0

The traditional view of Presidential debates is that each one is a discrete event, and that you go in with the sole goal of winning the debate. I think Trump sees them as a continuum - a first, second, and third act/round, if you will. I believe Trump has a strategy goal for each debate, and one of the goals for this debate was to divide Biden's voter base.

Meh, I think the radical left knows that Kamala will take over shortly after Biden would take office and enact whatever globalist policies her handlers want. It doesn't matter what Joe goes on the record as saying, because they know that Kamala would simply do her own thing.

2
PeytonManThing 2 points ago +4 / -2

Why is that a good plan? Rejecting the far left wish list is a smart play. They’re unlikely to vote Trump or abstain, and distancing himself from the radicals wins over moderates. If that was Trump’s plan he was playing right into Biden’s hands

Then why did betting odds shift so strongly in Biden’s favor today? Moved from -120 Biden +100 Trump to -160 Biden +138 Trump overnight. That’s really bad. The consensus is this was bad for Trump - and it was. Trump is ceding the centrist ground to Biden, even as Biden runs for the much more radical party. It’s distressing. I’m pissed about it

1
xzibit_b 1 point ago +1 / -0

A party that has been largely taken over by radical socialists are not going to be happy that Biden is denouncing their ideology. You're still under the idea that the Democrat party is majority moderate. No. The moderates have jumped ship. The moderates are Democrats in Name Only. The meat and bones of the current Democrat party are authoritarian communists who want to bring Stalinism (Kamala-ism) to the US. If Biden denounces that, he's going to piss off alot of his voting base.

1
PeytonManThing 1 point ago +1 / -0

I’m not under the impression the party is moderate at all. I am under the impression the radicals will hate Trump enough and understand the game that is the general election enough that they’re still going to vote Biden

2
Afeazo 2 points ago +2 / -0

I’m pretty sure Trump went up there to show everyone what a clown show this election is.

2
Juicebusters 2 points ago +2 / -0

and that was the highlight reel in terms of memorable moments - Biden's bizarre touting of the "Green New Deal" then rejecting it. Biden insisting there "is not manifesto!" (deal with Bernie) and Biden being all about cops and law and order.

I'm thinking, my guess, Trump just doubles-down on dividing the Democrats again next debate (if there is a 2nd one?) and I like how he keeps poking Hunter Biden.

Also noted: Boxing fans will know about the 'feeling out round' you often see. One or both are really jabbing but really to measure their distance, they might hurl and take a power shot to get an idea and of course they are looking for flaws, soft spots and weak zones for the next and later rounds. That is what I saw Trump doing. He was poking spots, taking some jabs to see what happened. I think he saw a 'Hunter Spot' get bruised, he jabbed with Bernie's Deal and saw that made Biden cringe. Trump just needed those and watch him start throwing hard shots to win next time.

2
mugatucrazypills 2 points ago +2 / -0

It got Scott Adams to reveal himself.

2
schiff_for_brains 2 points ago +2 / -0

Biden both rejected the green new deal directly and then sold it indirectly by describing it.

His goal was to attract moderates while dog whistling to the extreme leftists.

2
pedewithweed 2 points ago +2 / -0

That's some 45D chess there

2
MI_MAGA 2 points ago +2 / -0

Here is a three step process for expanding the Trump base. One for each debate:

  1. Divide the far-leftists from the leftists from the centrists, expose Biden to be weak, confused, and unprincipled
  2. Broaden the message by giving attention to those most underserved by the democrats and clearly offer the better alternative
  3. Unify the expanded base with positive pro-America agenda by setting unprecedented goals worth aspiring to achieve
1
OnlyBrosDotCom 1 point ago +1 / -0

AOC has already dumped the GND although it's still on his list of plans and part of his manifesto. He's got so many "Biden Plan" skeletons in his closet now he's got a graveyard of fucking foiled policies or promises that he's going to alienate his base.

1
NancyBaloney 1 point ago +2 / -1

The far leftists are going to vote for Biden no matter what. It’s their only choice. They know that they can force Biden to do anything they want with their BLM and Antifa militia.

Trump shouldn’t have been on offense. He should have just let Biden do all the talking. Biden has opportunities to slip up and show his dementia but Trump kept talking over him.

The the few undecided people don’t pay attention to actual policy. They don’t know what’s true or false. They only pay attention to the candidates demeanor. Trump was too aggressive and Biden could have defeated himself (Biden) but Trump spared him by interrupting him.

This was Biden’s to lose. Trump had nothing to win other than Biden embarrassing himself, which unfortunately he didn’t (I’m convinced he was on some performance enhancers)

3
MakeAmericaLegendary 3 points ago +3 / -0

We faced a similar showdown in 2016. First election is to push buttons, and the next two are to strike at the weaknesses he found. Plus, CNN's moderators somehow manage to be better than Fox's.

1

Trump knows Biden is a flip flopper who will say whatever it takes in the moment to sound good. He just had to nudge him in the right direction. Compulsive liars, which I think Biden is, don't have any inner convictions that they'll stick to no matter what. Now hopefully Biden has a bunch of Dems asking him why he's suddenly changed his mind on their pet causes.

I agree, it's a dangerous game to play. Poisoning the well worked well with Hillary. It could work with Biden, I'm seeing a lot of talk about having no enthusiasm to vote for either candidate, which helps Trump because his base is locked in. All of that is anecdotal of course. Trump campaign needs to hit him hard on wars and manufacturing jobs in the rust belt

3
DonutDog 3 points ago +3 / -0

No, the people who matter this time around are the people who voted Hillary in 2016 and are now pissed off at the direction DNC leadership is going in.

3
Robbybobbyrobbob 3 points ago +4 / -1

Ehh - I think it has it's merits. It made Biden look angry, it made Biden look feckless, weak and it made Biden distance himself from the far left ensuring low turnout (This potentially puts other states not normally in play, at play)

The biggest challenges Trump faces would be :

High turnout/support for Biden.
- Mail in ballots could make this the case - Otherwise, he's a low enthusiasm candidate. People aren't kicking down the door to vote Joe Biden. He's no Obama.

Biden does best in Rust Belt states (especially than Hillary I'd wager) - This is essential because Trump won based on this strategy. They needed to select decrepit Biden because if he can shave a rust belt state or two, that's all he needs realistically.
