NYC Met Opera cancelled everything until this time next year. Friends in Italy have been told no performances for over a year. Most ensembles - orchestras, acting groups, dance/ballet troupes - have canceled everything or are operating with bare-bones personnel.
I am not in an orchestra job right now, but have many friends who have lost their salaries completely and have had to look for scraps of work to keep themselves afloat. One based friend lost their apartment, and found trade work at an artists' retreat. If they had not found that they would have been instantly homeless. This person graduated from a top music school.
Since March I have been requested to do multiple "Zoom performances" but I have turned down every one because I spend hours on it every day doing my job as a teacher and I am sick as fuck of it. And that is absolutely not how music should be performed.
In Barcelona, a string quartet performed for a concert hall full of houseplants. My NPC colleagues were cooing over it. It about sent me into a full blown rage!
In the public schools, we are operating in multiple small, socially distanced orchestra groups and all kiddos must wear a mask at all times.
It is sickening. The arts community as a whole is suffering right now. Ok, maybe we aren't the most useful profession, but it's a sacrifice many of us were willing to make and we have been hit really hard. If I wasn't also a teacher I'd be screwed. I am lucky. I know a harpsichord player - yes, a harpsichord player - who is one of the most based Pedes I know but you'd never know it.
