Proud Boys, to me, seems more like a bikeless "tough guy" biker gang.
They were made in response to Antifa attacking and besieging colleges during Jordan Peterson's reign. Their purpose is to counter Antifa. And they do pretty good at times.
He said they were literally like a drinking social club who would show up to defend property against Anitfa. I think he separated from the group but his friends were getting thrown in jail and Antifa would walk after instigating fights. They threw the book at some of his friends after Antifa jumped them. Antifa has an army of lawyers behind them. The people funding them pay all their legal fees
The Proud Boys were formed by Gavin McInnes as a parody of men's groups. It was intentionally over-the-top ridiculous because it was very ironic.
However when Antifa started trying to attack and deplatform Gavin, his Proud Boys group started coming to his defense. Members of the group started showing up to other free speech events to protect the speakers from Antifa, and this has since become their main mission.
Of course standing up against the insane left-wing radicals falsely branded them "white supremacists" and Gavin stepped down.

I was under the impression that they formed because no one was coming to get antifa to stop blocking traffic, so they went out and yelled at antifa to get out of the road and weren't afriad to defend themselves from radical terrorist antifa types.
I would have started a group to un-block traffic if I was as upset about it as they were. I don't really care though. Just put 'er in cruise at 1mph and you're good.
It's an alt-lite / normiecon (sorry if there's no better label) group, but people like Gavin McInnes and Joe Biggs are members. You know the "I just wanna grill and fly trump flags from my pickup truck" gang.
